Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa, bordered by Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Benin, Togo, and Ghana. With a population estimated at 19 million (2016), Burkina Faso has gone through fluctuated economic progressions over the past years. Combined with high demographic growth (3.1% annually), this makes the country’s sustainable economic and social development challenging. In 2016, the Human Development Index (HDI) put the country in one of the lowest: 185 out of 188 countries and territories. The population is characterized by high proportion of young people (67% under 25 years old) and is estimated to increase up to 8 million by 2030.
Since 2011, the country’s political and social stability suffered from a significant downturn. The successful organization of presidential and legislative elections in November 2015 marked the end of the post-insurrectional political transition mechanism. The new government was installed in 2016 with its development priorities clearly set out in the National Economic and Social Development Plan (PNDES 2016-2020).
In 2018, Burkina Faso continued to face a multifaceted security and humanitarian crisis that included displacement but also food insecurity and malnutrition, floods.
